The Netherlands eScience Center is the Dutch national expertise center for the development and application of research software to advance academic research. We create the tools, infrastructure and digital methodologies that enable researchers to make major scientific breakthroughs and contribute to society. We do this by combining and harnessing our unique blend of scientific and software development skills. Our growing team of eScience research engineers are scientists with extensive backgrounds in a broad range of disciplines.

We are looking for an enthusiastic eScience Research Engineer.

The position

As an eScience Research Engineer, you will operate in a team consisting of both eScience Research Engineers and researchers from partner institutions. Your goal will be to improve the quality of research software for adoption by a broad academic audience. Your work will be instrumental in the generalization phase of many eScience projects. You will join the Netherlands eScience Center Generalization Team which is working to improve the quality of our research software to facilitate adoption by various scientific communities.

You will work on several diverse tools developed during research projects for a wide variety of scientific domains. Important challenges include improving the accessibility and ease-of-adoption of such tools.

eScience is intrinsically a team effort. You will therefore work closely with other eScience Research Engineers in- and outside the team and facilitate knowledge transfer between scientific disciplines. Good soft skills for communicating and collaborating with colleagues and external partners are essential, as are the following technical skills.

Your profile

  • Good communication and writing skills in English
  • Willing and able to learn new programming languages & technologies
  • Good software engineering skills, preferably including experience with
    • version control (we use Git, GitHub, Gitlab)
    • unit testing
    • continuous integration
    • software documentation
    • Containerization (Docker or Singularity)
    • Experienced in at least one of the following programming languages (Python, R, Java, Fortran, C++, JavaScript)
  • Some of the following skills:
    • Previous experience with working in a software development team
    • Community management
    • Experience with API design
    • Experience with software packaging and distribution
    • Familiarity with software engineering tools such as static analysis methods
    • Expertise in data analytics, e.g. machine learning, statistical analysis, data visualization
    • Be able to break down complex problems into concrete, manageable parts
    • You take a pragmatic approach to problem solving

Job offer

We offer a position at the Netherlands eScience Center initially for a period of 2 years within the collective agreement (CAO). Classification is based on education and experience, with salary depending on qualifications and experience, starting from €2.865- up to €5.064- gross per month, with a 38-hour working week (salary scale 9-11). Holiday pay amounts to 8% of the gross salary and we also offer a 13th month of salary as an end-of-year payment.

The Netherlands eScience Center offers an interesting and challenging position with additional options for personal development. You will work in an international team with an informal and creative working environment. The main location is Amsterdam (Science Park).
