Driving the Future of AI in Research: eScience Center Experts Selected for SCIANCE AI Working Groups
The Netherlands eScience Center is proud to contribute two members to the SCIANCE AI in Science Working Groups (AISWG). The aim of the working groups is to develop a cohesive framework for AI in Science to co-create the European Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda (SRIA). By participating, the eScience Center hopes to contribute practical perspectives from research software engineering and scientific infrastructures, particularly around reproducibility, sustainability, interoperability, and the responsible adoption of AI in research.

The SCIANCE consortium {Partners – SCIANCE} is part of the broader European effort to establish a long-term framework for AI-enabled science through the RAISE initiative. The SCIANCE Call for Experts in the fields of in artificial intelligence, scientific research, research infrastructures, HPC, Open Science and innovation generated 655 applications from 37 countries. Pablo Lopez Tarifa and Sarah Alidoost were among the experts who were selected to join respectively the AI Research and Experimental Design WG, and the Earth Science WG. Besides contributing to the SRIA they will be involved in the follow-up validation, community consultation and strategic alignment phases.

With my experience in developing research software and building reproducible workflows, I can help identify key research challenges and opportunities for AI-enabled discovery.”

The AI in Science Working Groups help shape the future European agenda for AI in Science. The SCIANCE project aimed to bring together experts in key scientific domains and in AI-related topics. The Working Groups will formulate recommendations that will contribute to strategic decisions on research priorities, infrastructure investments, skills development, and future funding opportunities. The role of the working groups is to influence research and innovation priorities, engage in interdisciplinary workshops and activities, contribute to consensus-driven outputs, share and leverage our knowledge, data, and methods.

The experience of the eScience Center supporting researchers through research software development will help ensure that practical implementation challenges and opportunities are represented in the European conversation on AI for Science.
