eScience Center & SURF at SuperComputing 2015 in USA

16 Nov 2015 - 3 min

Together with SURF we are attending this year`s Super Computing conference to present Dutch innovative developments to an international audience.

Innovative projects

SURFnet, SURFsara and the Netherlands eScience Center each have their own area of expertise, thereby also strengthening each other. This is illustrated in various projects, including:

High-resolution radar for earth and space observation

Imaging using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) on drones is increasingly applied in maritime search and rescue in adverse conditions, security and defense, iceberg detection tracking, and oil spill monitoring. However, real-time processing of SAR data on drones is challenging because of the high data rates (> Gbit/s)). This project addresses that challenge in an innovative way by using a low power embedded GPU to process radar data. Read more real-time processing of SAR data.

Using the world’s largest supercomputers to understand local sea level changes

As part of the eSALSA project, an international team is researching the effects of climate change with the help of four interlinked supercomputers. The project won the Enlighten Your Research Global Award. The project’s results have been brought together in a video. The project’s results have been brought together in a video.

NFV demo with live 4K video images at SuperComputing

At the conference, SURF will show how 4K video images can be manipulated in real time with the help of Network Function Virtualisation (NFV). Blog: NFV demo with live 4K video images

Enlighten Your Research

In this competition, academics from all fields of study are challenged to raise their research to a higher level. Participants conduct research in which the processing and analysis of very large quantities of (or extremely wide-ranging) scholarly data play a critical role. Support4research: support for ground-breaking research

SURF offers researchers a variety of ICT facilities to support ground-breaking research. They include ICT solutions for data transfer, data and file-sharing (including across borders), computing, remote collaboration, and visualisation. SURF helps researchers select the proper ICT tools. Read more about Support4research

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator

In the Netherlands, Nikhef and SURFsara together make up a Tier1-site, which means they receive data from experiments performed using CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator in Geneva. Read more about het collaboration between Nikhef and SURFsara
