January roundup – where has the eScience Center been this month?

The eScience Center has been actively engaging with the scientific community through various events and conferences, showcasing the impact we make through the application of research software. Check out what we’ve been up to this month!

A big win for eScience Center RSEs

Congratulations to Flavio Hafner and Malte Lüken, research software engineers at the eScience Center, on winning the Most Innovative Approach award in the ODISSEI Data Challenge 2024! Their work in predicting fertility trends in NL showcases the power of data science to tackle complex societal questions.

Bringing eScience to NWO Physics

Gijs van den Oord represented the Netherlands eScience Center at NWO Physics in Veldhoven earlier this month. NWO Physics is a large conference that provides an overview of physics topics and projects in the Netherlands. Researchers are given the opportunity to present their work.

Building bridges in research software community

During the DCC implementation network event on 14 January, representatives from the eScience Center met with coordinators of local and thematic DCCs. We discussed the challenges and opportunities around hiring research software trainers and plans for the expansion of the RSTNL network that will bring together research software trainers in a national network.

Software management in action

On 21 and 22 January, the Samen aan de Slag event took place with hands-on interactive workshops. Citizen science and data science were central themes in these workshops. Our colleague Carlos Martinez-Ortiz presented the ‘Build your own Software Management Plan’ workshop. Using guiding prompts, participants outlined the purpose of their software, identified tools and planned for collaboration and maintenance. This hands-on exercise helped participants understand the value of structured planning in real-world projects.

Speaker series on software management plans

On 23 January, Carlos Martinez-Ortiz gave a talk on ‘Software Management Plans: How do they lead to better research’ during the Helmholtz Platform for Research Software Engineering (HiRSE) seminar series. In his presentation, he talked about the practical guidelines for Software Management Plans developed by the Netherlands eScience Center and the Dutch research council (NWO).  This talk is available here.

Who are we?

The eScience Center is a research organization dedicated to applying research software to answer research questions in any scientific domain through project collaborations. It has the largest concentration of dedicated, high-level research software expertise in the Netherlands. The eScience Center also has a Fellowship Programme and makes all of its software and training materials openly available online. For more information about what we offer, visit esciencecenter.nl.
