November Roundup
ODISSEI Conference Impressions
On 4 November 2025 Research Software Engineers Angel, Carlos, Erik, Flavio and Malte attended the ODISSEI Conference at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht and hosted an info stand at the conference marketplace. Read their account of the day here.
34rd annual ADASS conference
Senior RSE Hanno Spreeuw spoke at the 35th ADASS Conference about PySE, the Python Source Extractor. PySE is software to extract and measure all the sources (stars, galaxies, etc) in a given astronomical image from a radio telescope. To detect fast bursts of radiation across the sky, Hanno has optimized PySE to extract over 100.000 sources in less than a second, allowing PySE to easily keep with up with the observational input stream. On top of that, PySE is now nicely documented, tested and packaged: ready for community uptake!

Turing Way Book dash
On the 13th of November, Community Manager Carlos Martinez-Ortiz participated at the Turing Way book-dash, organised by Lena Karvovskaya and Neha Moopen, at the Utrecht University Library. The book dash is an event to collaborate and contribute to the Turing Way guide, which provides resources to build an understanding of good practices.

NLRN Node Lead meeting
Tuesday 11th November, Carlos visited the Kauwgomballenfabriek in Amsterdam, not because he likes chewing gum, but to attend the Reproducibility network (NLRN) Node Lead meeting. It was a great event, with the opportunity to discuss the role research software has for research reproducibility.
- Don’t miss the NLRN Annual Symposium in January 2026
- A post from Daniela Gawehns on reproducibility network

Last but definitely not least: National Research Software Day!
We had a large eScience delegation at NRSD 2025: Fenne, Carlos, Jason, Rena, Stijn, Jaro, Carsten, Robin, Ole, Ewan, Faruk, Johan, Sander and Angel either attended or hosted workshops, and Fenne was the happy winner of the TDCC-NES funding opportunity. Read the full account of the day here.
