Stefan studied laboratory informatics and automatisation at Hogeschool West-Brabant. In 2000 he started at Unilever Research Vlaardingen, building an electronic library for functional food research containing information about conditions, treatments, drugs and natural products.

In 2003 he began working at Organon N.V. (later Schering-Plough and lastly MSD) in Oss within the Bioinformatics/Cheminformatics department, where he administrated the Unix infrastructure and maintained/developed applications. Stefan helped scientists run their computations on clusters and maintained bioinformatics tools like Ensembl and SRS. Some of the applications he developed are Copub, a text mining application based on co-publication, and Snooker, a virtual screening tool using multiple sequence alignments. Most of the applications he made use a rich web interface or are web service based.

Stefan joined the Netherlands eScience Center as eScience Engineer, specialized in software development for life science projects.
