The Dutch Research Council (NWO), Top Sector Energy, the Taskforce for Applied Research (SIA) and the Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC) invite researchers with backgrounds in the exact, technical and natural sciences, and humanities and social sciences to submit proposals.
Consortia of researchers and public/private parties can together request funding for innovative research in the area of energy system integration.
With this call for proposals, NWO/NLeSC and co-funders are promoting public-private partnerships within scientifically innovative subjects in the area of energy system integration. For this, an integrated view on the whole energy system is crucial. This call is part of the KIC 2018-2019 of the Topsector Energy (page in Dutch).
This call is aimed at researchers in the exact, technical and natural sciences, humanities and social sciences.
Each application involves at least one public/private partner.
The main applicant is an experienced researcher with a PhD and a permanent or temporary contract at a Dutch university or other NWO-acknowledged institute, for at least the duration of the application and the project. An exception on the required appointment duration can be made for main applicants or co-applicants with a 'tenure track'. For more information, see the call for proposals document below
Researchers of TO2-institutes and universities of applied science can be co-applicant and can receive funding.
Private and/or public parties (such as ministries, energy cooperatives) provide 15% co-funding (in kind and/or in cash). NWO-acknowledged institutes, TO2-institutes and universities of applied science cannot provide co-funding.
The minimum project size is 2 full-time research positions (4-year PhD students, 3-year postdocs) at NWO-acknowledged institutes. The maximum size is 3 full-time positions. Additionally, the following standard NWO budget modules can be requested:
Furthermore, each application requests 1.5 - 2.5 person years of eScience Research Engineers.
Additionally, max. 75,000 euros in personnel costs and max. 25,000 euros in material costs can be requested for personnel/material at universities of applied science.
Additionally, max. 146,461 euros in personnel costs and max. 48,332 euros in material costs can be requested for personnel/material at TO2-institutes.
The criteria for preproposals and full proposals are:
1) Scientific quality
2) Knowledge utilization
The preproposal phase has the following steps: obligatory advisory meeting with Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC), submission of preproposal, admissibility check, assessment and ranking by a broad assessment committee. The committee gives a non-binding advice to submit a full proposal or not.
The full proposal phase has the following steps: advisory meeting with NLeSC, submission of full proposal, admissibility check, sending of referee reports, submission of a rebuttal, assessment and ranking by the assessment committee. The committee writes a funding recommendation.
The decision phase consists of:
- a decision by NLeSC about funding the requested eScience Research Engineers;
- and a subsequent decision by NWO on the other requested resources.
