Dr. Maurice de Kleijn

Maurice de Kleijn holds a PhD in Geographical Information Science from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His journey to become a Geographic Information Science expert began during his master’s degree in Mediterranean Archaeology. As a student, he became interested in using Geographic Information Science (GIS) methods and tools to analyze and better understand the past. After his master’s degree, he worked as a GIS expert in Dutch commercial archaeology, which he left in 2010 to start as a researcher at the Spatial Information Laboratory (SPINlab) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In the almost 13 years he worked there, he wrote a dissertation in which he applied and developed GIS technologies – (e.g. spatial analysis, 3D, participatory planning support and spatial simulation modeling) for the fields of history, archeology and heritage landscape research. 

At the beginning of 2023, Maurice joined the Netherlands eScience Center as a Research Software Engineer. In this new role, he wants to bring the skills and knowledge he acquired in his previous position to the Social Sciences and Humanities section of the eScience Center. Furthermore, his ambition is to learn from the inspiring environment to ultimately advance the social sciences and humanities, in particular archaeology, history and heritage.
