Prof. dr. Karina van Dalen-Oskam


Karina van Dalen-Oskam is Head of the Department of Literary Studies at Huygens ING (KNAW) and member of the Huygens ING management team. She is also professor in Computational Literary studies at the University of Amsterdam. From 2015 to 2019, she chaired the Steering Committee of the International Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO).

Her research in computational literary studies focuses on fiction in Dutch and English. Using digital texts and computational methods, she analyses the writing style in texts from different time periods, oeuvres, and genres. She was project leader of The Riddle of Literary Quality (2012-2019), which aimed to find out whether literary quality can be measured, and currently leads the projects Track Changes: Textual scholarship and the challenge of digital literary writing at Huygens ING and Novel Perceptions: Towards an inclusive canon at the University of Wolverhampton, together with Bas Groes.

She also plays a role in the two large European projects in her research discipline: the COST Action Distant reading for European literary history and the Horizon 2020 project Computational Literary Studies Infrastructure (CLS INFRA).
