February roundup – where has the eScience Center been this month?
The eScience Center has been actively engaging with the scientific community through various events and conferences, showcasing the impact we make through the application of research software. Check out what we’ve been up to this month!
Data Love Week
Community manager Lieke de Boer showcased the new game created by the GHOST collective during Data Love Week: Open Science Alliance. The game offers an engaging way to explore the challenges of building sustainable research teams with diverse specialties (like research software) and the tension between fair recognition and limited resources. During these events at VU Amsterdam and Tilburg University, participants had the opportunity to experience firsthand how the game mirrors real academic team dynamics. Not only is the game (request yours here) fun to play for anyone, not just those in a research environment, but it also sparks discussions about the effects of scarcity on team diversity and collaboration.

FAIR-IMPACT event
Last week, community manager Carlos Martinez-Ortiz attended #FAIRfest, a festival organised by FAIR-IMPACT and FAIRCORE4EOSC to celebrate advancements of FAIR solutions in the European Open Science research landscape. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the outcomes of these projects, and to network with colleagues working in this area.
German Research Software Engineering conference
Earlier this month, Faruk Diblen and Carlos Martinez-Ortiz organized a contentathon (a workshop to work on content) for RSQkit (Research Software Quality Kit). At the conference, Faruk spoke about FAIR, Howfairis, and the software quality dashboard that he is building for the EVERSE project. During one of the talks at deRSE25 German Research Software Engineering conference, it was announced that there will be the establishment of a German “eScience Center”.

Who are we?
The eScience Center is a research organization dedicated to applying research software to answer research questions in any scientific domain through project collaborations. It has the largest concentration of dedicated, high-level research software expertise in the Netherlands. The eScience Center also has a fellowship programme and makes all of its software and training materials openly available online. For more information about what we offer, visit esciencecenter.nl.
