September roundup – where has the eScience Center been this month?
The eScience Center has been actively engaging with the scientific community through various events and conferences, showcasing the impact we make through the application of research software. Check out what we’ve been up to this month!
CLIN34: where linguistics and code collide
At the tail end August, Erik Tjong Kim Sang, Angel Daza and Thijs Vroegh attended the 34th edition of Computational Linguistics in The Netherlands (CLIN34) in Leiden. The event brought together over 200 computational linguists from the Netherlands and Flanders, fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Our RSEs enjoyed connecting with peers, discussing the latest trends and research in computational linguistics and exploring potential opportunities for interdisciplinary work. CLIN34 provided an excellent platform for networking and showcasing advancements in the field. You can find more details about the event here.

Highlights from the EMS 2024 conference
Earlier this month, Claire Donnelly and Peter Kalverla presented their latest work at the annual conference of the European Meteorological Society (EMS 2024). Claire introduced the Urban-M4 project, which aims to improve urban weather and climate modeling by incorporating Streetview imagery into the Weather & Research Forecasting (WRF) model to better represent building properties. Peter showcased how the WAM2layers moisture tracking model integrates best practices for model usability, making it easier to work with, reproduce experiments, and encourage reuse.

2024 International Funders Workshop
Our Programme Director, Colette Bos visited beautiful Uppsala in Sweden to attend the 3rd edition of the International Funders Workshop, previously held in the Netherlands and Canada. This edition was hosted by SciLifeLab and the Research Software Alliance, where different international networks discussed ways to further propel the recognition of research software in everyday practices.

Donating computers to students in need
Recently, our Programme Manager Niels Drost facilitated the donation of used and revived laptops to students in need through Project Edu-PC. We are proud to support such an important organisation!

RSE Rodríguez-Sánchez presenting at Spanish science communication event
Recently, our RSE Pablo Rodríguez-Sánchez, gave a talk at Naukas Bilbao (Spain), one of Europe’s largest science communication events.
“Talking in an impressive venue like the Euskalduna Bilbao theater was an awesome experience. Thanks to Euskampus Fundazioa and Cátedra de Cultura Científica de la UPV/EHU for a brilliant organization,” said Pablo.
