October roundup – where has the eScience Center been this month?
The eScience Center has been actively engaging with the scientific community through various events and conferences, showcasing the impact we make through the application of research software. Check out what we’ve been up to this month!
eScience Center-Lorentz workshop
Each year, the eScience Center holds a competition in collaboration with the Lorentz Center where winners have the opportunity to organize two cutting-edge workshops. This year’s theme was Innovation in Digital Heritage Research. One of the competition winners hosted a workshop earlier this month entitled Advancing ecosystem carbon flux research. RSEs from the eScience Center, Claire Donnelly and Bart Schilperoort, were scientific organizers of the workshop and supported the participants.
Inspiring the next generation of scientists
RSE Peter Kalverla delivered a keynote speech and joined a panel at the UU-NIOZ Early Career Scientist Symposium earlier this month. The symposium, which took place at Utrecht University, offered PhD candidates and postdocs the opportunity to network and develop new ideas, perspectives, projects and papers with their colleagues in ocean sciences. Peter and Dani Bodor also gave a workshop titled “Making the most out of your code”.
Moisture tracking workshop
Earlier this month, we held a workshop at the eScience Center on moisture tracking for climate models. The workshop was in collaboration with researchers from TU Delft, Wageningen University & Research and Open Science NL. During the workshop, everyone was motivated to work towards a better understanding and governance of water availability and abundance in the future.

Biophysics conference
The eScience Center had a booth at the NWO Biophysics conference in Veldhoven. The annual national conference had an exciting programme covering topics varying from microscopy and cell biology to biomedical engineering. RSE Luisa Orozco attended the conference and networked with colleagues in the world of biophysics.

Who are we?
The eScience Center is a research organization dedicated to applying research software to answer research questions in any scientific domain through project collaborations. It has the largest concentration of dedicated, high-level research software expertise in the Netherlands. The eScience Center also has a Fellowship Programme and makes all of its software and training materials openly available online. For more information about what we offer, visit esciencecenter.nl.
